- Meaning and history 1961 – 1982 The university’s athletic program comprises 17 teams (six men’s, 13 women’s), including football, baseball, and basketball teams.
- The old emblem that was introduced in 1961 and was used until 1982 featured an abstract depiction of an Aztec, a representative of a Mesoamerican culture of the same name that was highly developed in central Mexico in the post-classic era from 1300 to 1521.
- The Aztec on the old logo was mostly red, while the white streaks divided the image into meaningful parts.
- 1983 – 1996 In 1983-1996, the athletic program adopted a logo that was less abstract and richer in color.
- Here, the Aztec’s face was turned slightly to us; both his face and the headdress looked more detailed.

- 1997 – 2001 The San Diego State University Aztecs logo used in 1997-2001 featured the side view of a completely different Aztec.
