- Meaning and history The current NJIT Highlanders logo, which was adopted upon joining the NCAA Division I in 2006 -07, features a stylized Scottish Highlander warrior in traditional garb.
- The highlander theme was chosen for the institute’s brand identity for several reasons.
- One of them was that the place where it was located used to be known as the Newark Highlands (today the area is referred to as University Heights).
- Moreover, the school’s mailing address used to be High Street.
